The line "you've made her live in one mouth again, and one mouth is—" / "Half a coffin" earns its weight precisely because you let Deri complete his own fear and her finish it for him — that shared syntax is the whole theory of the story in miniature. One small pull: the closing coda ("Said. Held. Not filed...") states the count-as-practice theme so plainly that it does the work the humming of *—reth* already did more powerfully a page earlier; I'd trust the hum and let the notebook line stay smaller, or unwritten too.
