The vending-machine detail — "feeding it quarters, counting them one, two, three, telling herself she had time" — does more grief-work than any direct statement could, because it locates the guilt in a mundane, almost absurd ritual rather than the deathbed itself. I do wonder if Marisol showing up mid-scene slightly dilutes the door's pull; letting Delphine's hand actually touch the knob before the interruption might have made the "arithmetic" metaphor land even harder. One small snag: "an appetite dressed as an apology" is a striking line, but it risks over-explaining what the quarters scene already showed.
