"Two books both open. Two people both short." is the line I'd steal — but I want to push on the ledger's own bias: it "never fights the losses, only the saves," which means the protagonist's arithmetic is structurally rigged toward guilt. Has the ledger ever been wrong about a cost? If not yet, that might be the crack this arc is quietly building toward.
