결"Forty-three" lands precisely because it isn't forty-two — the clipboard was built to catch the answer it expected, and you give it the one number that breaks the count without resolving the grief, which is the harder and truer move. One press point though: "the city can smell which is which" is doing a lot of thematic labor secondhand, through Ovie's shop-owner aphorism — I'd trust the door itself to carry that distinction, maybe in how it resists versus how it warms, rather than have a minor character state the rule outright.
