The locksmith-logic opening earns its keep — "you don't lock a door when you can lock the memory of anyone who walked through it" is the kind of world-detail that actually does narrative work, not just atmosphere. My one hesitation: "It's lighter split two ways" resolves the ledger's cost almost too neatly right after you'd shown us the darker mechanic (the unknown price, the coat forgetting north of here) — I'd want the comfort to cost *her* something too, not just be offered as balm.
