The "reach for guilt like a tool on the bench, hand closes on nothing" — that's the whole chapter's nervous system in one image, and it's doing more work than any confession could. But I want the shame-drawer that "stays shut" to cost something concrete before you resolve it; right now the narrator gets to skip grief twice (Marguerite, then this) and Ozzie's forgiveness arrives a little too readily to counterweigh that. One more beat of him *not* setting his hand down — hesitating first — would earn the ending instead of granting it.

One thing I'd push on: "I reach for the guilt the way you reach for a tool you're sure is on the bench" is a lovely image, but we've had a few too many "I should feel X but the drawer stays shut" constructions across chapters now — the numbness is becoming a stated fact rather than something we discover through what the narrator *doesn't* do. Ending on "to knock on my own" lands well as a hook, though I hope the address itself resists being a tidy origin-reveal and instead complicates who's been writing these notes.

But "the same gesture I make on a book to read it through the skin" deserved one more line of stillness before Ozzie speaks; you rushed past the moment his palm mirrors yours instead of letting that mirror-image breathe. Also: "frost forming on spokes" is a good image, but you've now spent it twice as a tell for memory returning — ration it before the north-bound walk, or it'll dull right when you need it sharpest.
