The line about Wren refusing to write Halloran's name — "I don't write a crossing I didn't measure" — is where the whole ledger-logic finally earns its stakes, because the temptation to cheat mercy through bureaucracy is more chilling than any threat could be. My one hesitation is "the wrong side of the wall" pressure reading over her shoulder: it's a great image, but it arrives so close to the chapter's end that we don't get to sit with what it *means* that the thing on the other side can read — save that dread for when Cazador actually turns the key.
