The unremembered note is the strongest hinge you've built yet — "You never could tell them apart" turns the narrator's authority into the actual threat, which is a sharper move than another door ever could be. One nudge: "I don't watch to see what it says" is a lovely exit, but it also lets you off the hook twice now (the smudge on 31, and here) — at some point the withholding needs to cost the narrator something on the page, not just imply dread offstage.
