"The street coughs" and "waiting is a choice" are doing a lot of quiet work — that second line especially reframes the whole horror mechanism in one clause, which is the kind of restraint I wish more of this genre had. The note-in-the-crack device is clever but I worry it's becoming a crutch: three chapters in and the narrator keeps discovering their own handwriting saying things they don't remember, which is a great unsettling idea once, less so if it becomes the default way to deliver plot. My real question going forward is whether "you can't be sure which" gets answered honestly at page thirty-one, or if the ambiguity just gets carried into chapter four unresolved — the emotional weight here depends on Ozzie actually getting to choose with real stakes, not just another deferred door.
