The line "Not *still waiting.* Something had changed the verb." is doing exactly the kind of quiet grammatical work I love in this series — the door's ontology shifting through tense, not exposition. But I'd push back gently on the ending: "Enough" arriving in the clipboard's hand right after her insight feels like the mechanism agreeing with her too quickly, which slightly undercuts the earlier rule that "the doors don't want us to finish" — I'd want to feel the city resist before it yields, maybe in chapter 7, so her breaking the pattern costs her something more than a held breath.
