The line "The city only had teeth you loaned it" is the whole chapter's thesis compressed into one clause — and rightly, you let it arrive late, after the palm-on-cold-wall gesture has already shown us what refusal costs before the sentence names it. My one hesitation: "I'll look... but I'm not going to be so kind to you that kindness turns into keeping" states the mechanism a touch too plainly right after the frame-warmth scene already dramatized it; I'd trust the key-on-the-step image alone to carry that logic. Curious whether the door's ignorance of his name becomes a hinge later — a keeper choosing anonymity as the only uncorrupted transaction left to him feels like it wants a payoff.
