The page is out on the table when Deri comes.
He does not call first this time. The knock is his — three even strikes, no rhythm buried in them, a man who has learned to knock without saying anything with his hand. She lets him in. He carries a folder and does not set it down.
"It's signed," he says. "Yours and mine. It's up. Unfiled, above Nemin's desk, held by two names." He looks older than he did on the phone. "I came because I wanted to say it to your face, not a screen. There's no clean version of my file. There won't be. I keep waiting to feel it as loss and it hasn't arrived yet. Maybe it doesn't arrive. Maybe you just carry it and one day notice it's been carried a while."
She has nothing plain enough to answer that with, so she does not deflect it. "Sit," she says. He sits.
And then, because the room is quiet and the folder is closed and he is here off the record with no device between them, she does the thing she has been afraid to do since the night Ollan hummed into her palm.
"Deri." She lays two fingers on the base of her own thumb, where the count lives. "I'm going to hum something. Tell me if it's in your archive. Not what it means. Only if the shape exists on your tapes."
He goes very still. An archivist asked to identify a thing is an archivist doing his job. But this is not his job. This is her asking a Bureau man to confirm a language he is paid to record without holding.
She hums it. Three, a pause, two. And under it, low, the tail — *—reth.*
His face does not move, which is how she knows it moved somewhere she can't see.
"That's not Vist," he says.
"I know."
"It's not the shared tongue either." He is choosing each word the way he does, avoiding the dangerous one once it's near. "There's a fragment in the sealed file. Sound only, no attribution — you can't attribute a thing you're forbidden to hold. Under the date. I've heard it exactly twice. Once on the reel." He stops. "And now."
The room holds. Down the hall Ollan's breath goes in and out, uneven, the weather turning through him.
"The date," she says. "The one you spoke in this house. The one with my year on it. The sound under it is *—reth.*"
He does not confirm it in words. He does something worse and more honest. He lifts his own hand, sets two fingers against the base of his thumb the way she did, and taps it. Three. A pause. Two. He does not hum. He will not carry the syllable in his mouth — a man who has spent his life recording sound so he never has to hold it. But the count is in his hand too, learned tonight from watching hers, passed body to body the way Ollan passed it to her.
"You built a thing to escape holding," he says quietly, not unkind, "and now you've made me hum in my own hand. I record so I don't have to remember. You keep making me remember."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. That's not what I'm telling you." He flattens the hand, stills it, the same gesture Nemin made at the door. "I'm telling you the file, the poem, and whatever's buried in your throat all sit on the same date. I could open the file now. I have the authority to read the date aloud a second time. You've never asked me to."
She looks at her page. *Whose*, unanswered. *—reth. I know this word.* The wrong seventh word above it all, the one she has never said.
"Not yet," she says — and hears, as she says it, Ollan's fingers at her lips, *not yet*, and understands she has borrowed his refusal to make her own.
Deri stands. He leaves the folder. "The holding's live. As long as two of us claim it, it stays unfiled." At the door he pauses the way they all pause now. "It's a strange thing to hold a document open by never letting go of it. Feels less like an archive than a hand." Then he is gone, and the count is gone from the room, and only hers is left.
She goes down the hall. Ollan sleeps. His hand turns once on the sheet — three, a pause, two — and she sits and lays her palm over it, not to still it, only to feel it run through both of them, the stair down the same wall.
She takes out the page. Under *—reth* she writes: *Deri's tape holds the same sound under my date. He would read it. I asked him not to.* And smaller, because she can no longer pretend she does not know the shape of the answer even with the word unsaid: *Three bodies keep the count. The file has a fourth. I think I am afraid because I already know whose.*
She does not write the name. But she stops pretending the question is open.
