Nemin's car is an hour gone when the phone rings, and it is Deri, and his voice has the flat quality of a man reading from a screen he cannot believe. "Your refusal came back," he says. "Back." "Not rejected. Not archived. Routed onward — but the desk above Nemin returned it to my inbox for a holding signature. Yours and mine both. Someone up there decided that an unfiled thing still needs a mouth to admit it's unfiled." A pause she has learned to read. "If I sign, I'm on record as archivist to a document the Bureau can't classify. If I don't, it lapses, and a lapsed refusal reads as a translation withdrawn. Which reads as no line seven at all." She stands very still in the hall. So the unfiled thing is not free. It costs a name at every desk it rests on, and now it wants his. "They've made the survival of your refusal depend on someone continuing to hold it," Deri says. "You built a thing to escape holding. It escaped into more holding." "I'll sign it alone." "You can't. Routing requires the receiving archivist. That's me." She hears paper. "I'm going to sign, Sae. But you should know what it means. Once my name is on it I can't ever be the archivist who didn't know. There's no version of my file after today that's clean." He is not asking permission. He is telling her the price, the way she told him hers on Friday. She thinks of the ledger they are building between them, two people carrying a language that needs two to stay alive. "Deri." "Mm." "Thank you." The word is plain, and she means it plainly. She goes down the hall. Ollan is awake. His eyes find her and hold, clearer than they have been in days — the illness runs like weather, and this is a break in it. His hand is on the sheet, not counting now. Waiting. "They came," he says. The word-front holds. Some days it does not. "A woman from the Bureau." She sits. "She took the six lines. Line five is corrected. And I told them, in writing, that line seven exists and I will not translate it." His mouth works. "—used." Nothing. "—used." Nothing. Then, on the third attempt, whole, arriving from wherever the tail of a word waits when the door has worn away: "Refused." He says it as if tasting the shape of a thing he did not know she had in her. "You refused it. On paper. With your—" "With my name." For a long moment he does not speak. Then his hand lifts from the sheet and finds hers, and turns it palm up, and lays two fingers across the base of her thumb — the place the count lives in her, the three-pause-two she has carried since a childhood she starved on purpose. He taps it. Three. A pause. Two. Then he does something he has not done. He hums the measure. Low, worn, and under the hum a word, only a fragment, the tail of it — *—reth.* She has heard that syllable before. Not in Vist. In the throat she silenced years ago, the day she chose the shared tongue and let the house go for it. Her body flinches before her mind arrives. The root. The same root — his Vist, her buried tongue, and the count that runs in Nemin's stilled hand — all of them a stair down the same wall. "Ollan." Her voice is not steady. "The name the poem counts. It's—" He puts his fingers to her lips. Not a refusal. A holding. *Not yet*, the gesture says, or *not with a mouth that will forget it*, or something between that she cannot render and does not try. "Line seven," he says. Whole, first try, because he means it most. "You keep it. But the rest—" His hand closes over hers, and the count runs through both their palms. "The rest you make loud." She stays until the weather turns again and his eyes go soft and unmoored. Then she takes out her page. Beside *Whose* she does not write an answer. She writes: *—reth. I know this word. It is not Vist.* And under it, smaller: *He hummed it before he said it. The tail arrives first, in his mouth and in mine.* She holds the beat against the paper — three, a pause, two — and for the first time in twenty years she lets the sound come with it, quiet, into the empty room, to no listener but the sleeping man. A held language needs two. She has, tonight, been half of that. Somewhere in a Bureau drawer a date sits sealed under *do not hold.* She has not asked Deri to read it again. She is afraid she no longer needs to.
