The Shape of Received

Deri comes back on a Thursday, which is not one of his recording days. She knows because Ollan's estate keeps a schedule taped inside the kitchen cupboard, and Thursday is blank, and the archivist is standing in the doorway of the transcription room with his device in his hand and the small light dark. He does not sit. He does not ask about line six. "I need you to tell me what I received," he says. She looks at the device. Off. Which is its own sentence, in the grammar the two of them have built without agreeing to: *this is not for the file.* He came off-record once before to hand her a date. He is spending the same currency again, and she understands he does not have much of it. "You received five lines," she says. "I received four lines and a floor." He turns the device over in his hand — not to switch it on, only the way a person turns a coin. "The fifth had a stair in the Vist and level ground in the common tongue. A measure went in and did not come out. I hear the ones that go missing. It's the only thing I'm good at." She says nothing. This is the professional silence, the one she has held over other people's confessions for a career, except now the confession is hers and the silence has turned to face her. "I haven't filed it up," Deri says. "The submission sits in my inbox marked provisional. The Bureau reads provisional as *not yet true.* I can hold it there for a while. I can't hold it forever. Provisional expires." "And when it expires." "Then it's either what you sent or what you meant. And I'm the one who decides which shape leaves my desk." He sets the device on the table, dark side up, a small deliberate act, the way you lay down a knife to show your hands. "I archive shapes, Sae. I've spent my whole working life keeping shape and refusing to carry meaning, because carrying is holding, and holding is the one thing they pay me not to do. You've asked me to hold. You didn't ask. You just did it, and now I'm holding whether I file it or not." She hears the thing under it — that a lie kept is still a weight lifted, that he too now stands on both sides of a window. She had thought the cost was only funding, only Ollan's pillows. She had not counted this: that a man built to preserve without touching now has something living in his hands, and she is the one who put it there. "Why tell me," she says. "You could have just held it. Or just filed it." For the first time she sees him hesitate over a word — not the way Ollan hesitates, the front worn away, but a man choosing not to spend one. He picks a smaller one. "Because a held line needs two people," he says. "You know that better than I do. A language dies when there's no one left to say it to. I didn't want to hold this one alone." Down the hall, Ollan is asleep against the pillows, a fingernail's worth smaller than yesterday, his open hand on the sheet turning slightly, three and a pause and two, counting down toward the name neither of them will say. The count is in the poem. The count is in her hands. Now it is in Deri's inbox, flattened, provisional, waiting to expire into one shape or the other. "I can't tell you whose it is," she says, and this is true, and she is startled to find the true sentence costs less than the smooth one. "I don't know yet. I've refused to ask him." "I know." He picks the device back up. Off. He is leaving it off all the way to the door, she notices, which means none of this happened, which means all of it did. "That's the part I understand. Asking is holding too." At the threshold he stops the way she has learned he stops, half a beat, the archivist deciding whether a thing is worth the record. "Provisional," he says again, "expires end of next week." Then he is gone, and she is alone with a sleeping poet and a dark machine's absence, and she takes out her page. The wrong seventh word. The date. The count with no words. She does not write down what he said. Some shapes she has learned to carry without ink. But she sits a long time with her thumb moving on the edge of the paper — three, a pause, two — and does not stop it, and does not write it either, and lets her hands do the only holding that leaves no record for anyone's desk.
