Line six arrives on a Tuesday, and it fails.
Ollan opens his mouth and the front of the word wears off before it reaches her — only a tail of sound, *—ren*, the vowel intact, the door of it gone. He tries again. *—ren.* His hand turns on the sheet, three and a pause and two, unaware, the count carrying what the mouth cannot. She writes down what she has: the survived syllable, the empty space in front of it where the beginning used to be.
"Wait," she says.
He waits. He has learned her *wait* the way she has learned his silences. She sits with the tail of the word and does not force the rest, because forcing a front that has gone will only make him spend the whole word early, and there are not many words left to spend.
By the third attempt the front comes — clean, whole, arriving late the way his most-meant words do. She hears it and does not translate it aloud. She only sets it beside the phonetic Vist on the left of her file, where the count runs down the margin like a stair her knee still remembers, and leaves the right-hand column empty.
The empty column is the problem.
Because the solicitor's second email came this morning, and it is not a request. *Interim submission, lines one through six, in the common tongue, is now three business days overdue against the provisional hold. The Bureau requires resolution by Friday.* She reads it once. Three days. Deri said end of next week. The Bureau has moved the wall closer without telling him, or the provisional he bought was always shorter than he believed, or someone above his desk counted the days differently. The calendar has turned into a clock, and the clock is not hers to slow.
She could send line six clean and honest — line six is only grief, no measure in it yet, the count between the beats rather than inside them. She could send it and buy no time and change nothing. Or she could not send it, and let Friday arrive with an empty column, and force Deri to file what he holds — the false line five, still provisional, still not yet true — into one shape or the other, on a deadline he did not set.
She calls him. It is not a recording day.
He answers on the second ring, which means he was waiting to see whose name it was. "Friday," she says, before he can. "The solicitor moved it to Friday."
A silence on his end, and in it she hears him doing the arithmetic she has already done — that provisional does not survive an overdue interim, that the two holds are one hold now, that the day he named has been taken from him. "That wasn't mine to give," he says finally. "Someone re-dated it above me."
"Nemin." She says the name and does not know where it comes from, except that a shape this deliberate has to have a hand behind it, and the estate has been watched from the Bureau's side since before she came.
He does not confirm it. He does not deny it either, which is its own grammar. "If you send six clean," he says, "line five is still false and still sitting in my inbox, and Friday it stops being provisional whatever I do. If you don't send six, they breach the clause and Ollan loses—" He stops. He does not spend the word *pillows.* "You know what he loses."
"I know."
"So it's the count or the man," he says. "That's the shape of Friday."
She looks down the hall, where Ollan is asleep against the pillows the Bureau pays for, his open hand turning on the sheet, three and a pause and two, spending nothing, counting down toward the name she has refused to ask. The false line hides the measure. The measure is his life, or hers, or a third one buried under both — she still will not ask which. Friday will not wait for her to be ready to know.
"There's a third shape," she hears herself say.
Deri is quiet the way a machine is quiet before it records. "Say it off the desk," he says. "This line's not for the file."
She takes out the page — the wrong seventh word, the date, the count with no words — and lays her thumb flat against it, three, a pause, two, and holds the beat while she decides how much of the third shape to give him now, and how much to carry, unspoken, into Friday.
