The detention visitation room has a table bolted to the floor and two chairs that are not.
Ines takes the one across from Tuun. Daniel is asked to wait outside the door — her condition, not the facility's — and she has agreed to nothing except to ask, in his grammar, the question she came to ask. The laptop stays with Daniel. She has brought nothing but herself and the mode she trusts least: consecutive, no booth, no team, no thirty-minute hand-off. Just a table and the fact that she is the only one in the building who can carry him at all.
She speaks in Spanish, because Spanish is what she has, and because she has stopped pretending the choice isn't one. She watches him understand and set the understanding aside — the third refusal now, and she does not misread it. She asks him the question the way Daniel needed it asked: marked, careful. Whether he will hear the recording once more. Not to be tested. To say, if he can, whose voice.
Tuun does not answer for a long time. His careful hands are folded. When he speaks it is slow, watching her mouth, each clause folding back to do its work before it lets itself be said.
She renders it to no one — there is no court here — and hears herself do it anyway, aloud, because she does not know how else to hold it. "I heard a voice — this I heard, I did not see the mouth. It was — " He stops. Repeats the clause. Leans in until she meets his eyes, the way he did in chambers, needing her to carry it exactly. She carries it. "It was told to me, once, that my brother was taken to a place that records the dead. I was told this. I did not see him go."
Then the rupture. He shifts out of the clauses that address the empty air where a court should be and addresses her — the mouth that carries him — directly, and she does not move past it this time. She sits inside it. She does not have all the words. She has the shape: a question, marked as a thing he does not know and cannot infer, only ask. *The voice. Was it recorded before he was lost, or after.* Before, or after. Witnessed by the machine, or made unreachable first and kept.
She has no answer. Daniel has not given her one. *A speaker no longer reachable* — reachable by whom, unreachable since when. The question she left open on a scrap is sitting across a bolted table now, folded into a grammar that will not let it be asked without marking that it is unanswered.
"The interpreter does not know," she says, in third person, though there is no record to protect him from — only herself, only the habit of the one lawful voice she has. Tuun watches her say it. He understands *does not know*; he has lived eight months inside it.
He gives her his answer then. One sentence, marked. She takes it exactly — the sentence he gives, not the one Daniel needs.
In the hall Daniel is turning nothing in his hands. "Well?" The apology is already forming.
"He'll listen," Ines says. "Once. He told me why, and I'm going to give it to you exactly, because that was the deal." She holds his eyes. "He said — reported, not witnessed, he was careful — that he will listen to know whether the voice was taken while its owner could still say no. Not whether it's his brother. Whether it was recorded with permission." She lets it land. "He asked the question you've been refusing to answer, Daniel. In a language you can't read. And now I've read it to you. So."
Daniel does not go to 2018. She watches him not go there — watches the door of that story stand open and unused. "I don't know if there was permission," he says. The plainest sentence he has managed. "The fieldworker's consent forms are — ambiguous. Inherited. I've been telling myself deposited means allowed."
"It doesn't," she says.
"No." He looks at the wall. "It's the shape of a no."
That night she opens the folder. Not the front, not the Mam word — the new blank page. She writes, and for once files it: *He asked whether the voice was taken while it could still refuse. Witnessed, reported, inferred — she has spent her life sorting his knowing into hers. She did not once ask which of her own silences she had witnessed and which she had only agreed to.*
She does not underline it. But she does not throw it out.
